🔥 What Is a Temazcal?

A Temazcal (from the Nahuatl temāzcalli, meaning “house of heat”) is an ancient Mesoamerican sweat lodge ceremony, practiced for centuries by the Aztec, Maya, and other Indigenous peoples. Traditionally used for physical purification, emotional release, and spiritual renewal, the Temazcal symbolizes the womb of Mother Earth—entering it represents a return to the source, a shedding of what no longer serves, and a rebirth into wholeness.

🌿 The Ceremony

Our Temazcal ceremonies take place in a sacred space on our property in Mindo, Ecuador, surrounded by the lush biodiversity of the cloud forest. Each ceremony is guided by Medicine Man Galo, who brings ancestral wisdom, prayer, and heart-centered leadership to this transformative journey.

🔥 The Fire and the Stones

At dawn, stones, known as abuelitas or “grandmothers,” are placed in a sacred fire to heat for several hours until they glow red-hot. These stones, considered living elders, carry the energy and memory of the Earth. When ready, they are brought into the center of the lodge and placed in a pit. Medicinal herbs like eucalyptus, sage, or copal are infused into water and poured over the stones, creating therapeutic steam that fills the Temazcal.

🌀 The Four Doors (Rounds)

The ceremony is divided into four rounds, or “doors”, each about 10–15 minutes. Between rounds, the lodge door is opened to release heat, bring in fresh air, and add new hot stones. Each round aligns with a cardinal direction and element, guiding participants through a holistic healing journey:

1. East (Air) – New beginnings, clarity, inspiration.

2. South (Fire) – Vitality, passion, emotional healing.

3. West (Water) – Introspection, emotional cleansing, surrender.

4. North (Earth) – Wisdom, grounding, integration.

During each round, Galo leads songs, prayers, and rhythmic drumming, creating an immersive space for release and renewal.

💧 Healing Pools & Plant Baths

A unique part of our Temazcal experience is access to our natural healing pool, prepared as a sacred plant bath. After exiting the heat of the lodge, participants are invited to immerse themselves in the cool, refreshing waters infused with medicinal plants.

The plant bath offers:

• Cooling and Rebalancing: Restoring body temperature and soothing the skin.

• Energetic Cleansing: The water, blessed with healing herbs, washes away stagnant energies released during the sweat.

• Deep Relaxation: A moment to pause, integrate, and receive the nurturing embrace of water and plants.

Some participants choose to enter the pool between rounds; others wait until after the final round. Either way, it serves as a beautiful bridge between fire and water, heat and coolness, release and renewal.
